What to see and do
Petite France is the one part of Strasbourg where you walk between four channels of water without meeting a car. The tanners’ houses still show the open lofts where hides were dried, and the terraces below them now line the Ill. An hour is enough to cross the island and reach the covered bridges upstream.
The Petite Venise is the ten minutes of Colmar that everyone photographs: a row of low market gardeners’ houses along the Lauch, built to be supplied by the water rather than the street. Flat-bottomed boats leave the Krutenau quay at walking pace, which is the only way to see the façades from below.
Riquewihr never lost its medieval walls, so the village you walk into is the one the wine merchants left behind: a single street climbing between ochre, blue and pink houses under wrought-iron signs. Go up as far as the Dolder gate tower, then come back down through the growers’ cellars.
Eguisheim is laid out as rings of streets around a vanished castle, so you walk it as a spiral and return to your starting point without ever choosing a direction. Geraniums fill almost every window and the cellars open straight onto the street, which makes it the easiest village here for an unplanned tasting.
The Haut-Kœnigsbourg is the one castle in Alsace you climb to for the view as much as for the rooms: from the keep the whole plain lies below and the Black Forest closes the horizon. It was rebuilt in pink sandstone rather than left as a ruin, so the inside is furnished and the visit still works in bad weather.

Do We Need to Drive to See the Wine Route?
No. Most travelers here take a private driver, because the wine route is a series of tastings and the villages are small, with parking that fills early. You get the freedom of a car without the part of it that spoils a tasting day.
A rental car remains a good choice outside the peak weeks, particularly if you want to spend time in the Vosges rather than only on the plain.
