D-Day Beaches: 4 Days in Normandy, Based in Bayeux

The D-Day beaches are an enormous stretch of ground where the essential part is invisible: an ordinary cliff, a field of craters, an empty beach. Without someone to tell you what happened there, you are looking at scenery. With the rental car alone you set off with the detailed itinerary and the tickets booked, but the story is yours to find.

Two paid admissions are included and booked in your name: the D-Day Museum in Arromanches and the Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Église. They are the two that add what the ground itself cannot tell you. The thirteen other stops on the programme, from the beaches to the cemeteries by way of the Longues-sur-Mer Battery and the British Normandy Memorial, are all free to enter: we say so rather than passing them off as included admissions.

Not at the moment, and it is worth saying straight away since it is usually the first question. The Tapestry museum is closed for renovation and the work itself cannot be seen in Bayeux while the works last. The rest of Bayeux is untouched: the cathedral, the canal and the half-timbered houses, which you discover at your own pace on the afternoon you arrive.

The programme covers all three sectors, but every nation has its own places: Omaha, Pointe du Hoc and the airborne sector for Americans, Juno and the Canadian cemetery at Bény-sur-Mer for Canadians, Gold Beach, Ver-sur-Mer and Pegasus Bridge for British travellers, Mont-Ormel for Poles. And if a relative served here, tell us: finding their grave or their sector changes the nature of the trip, and it is prepared before you arrive.

No. You stay all three nights in the same 4-star hotel in Bayeux. Every day is a round trip from the same room, and every evening you come back to a small medieval town that came through the war intact, lively enough to eat well.

Because it follows the tide. The Mulberry harbour caissons only rise clear of the water at low tide, the only moment when you can walk down onto the sand and out to them. Since that hour shifts by the day, Arromanches takes either the morning or the afternoon depending on your dates, and Longues-sur-Mer with Juno Beach take the other half-day. Arrival day is light, time enough to settle in. Days 2 and 3 are full days, each built around one sector; the Cotentin day, the longest, falls in the middle of the trip while you are rested. Day 4 plays out entirely within half an hour of Bayeux and runs from a morning to a full day depending on when you leave, La Cambe being the stop that drops if you go early. Your bags travel in the car: tell us your train or flight time and we build the day around it.

The trip begins when you arrive in Bayeux: travel from your previous stop is not included, but we are happy to book it as an option. From Paris, allow a little over two hours by train from Gare Saint-Lazare, usually without a change, and the transfer from the station to the hotel is included. By car, around three hours.

Breakfast is included on all three nights. Lunches and dinners are not, and that is deliberate: the days end at varying hours and it is better to keep the choice open. Tell us which meals you would like booked and we choose the tables with you.

Reasonable fitness is enough, but the days are spent largely outdoors and on foot: the headland at Pointe du Hoc, the grounds of the American cemetery, the sand at Omaha, the dunes at Utah Beach. Bring proper shoes and a windbreaker, the Normandy coast is exposed in every season. Tell us if there is any mobility constraint, several stops can be adapted.

From the age where history starts to speak to them, yes, and often better than you would expect: the Airborne Museum is built to hold a teenager’s attention, and out on the sand a guide telling the story does far more than a panel of text. For young children, the American cemetery and Pointe du Hoc remain demanding places, and the pace can be eased on request.
