Method-selected recommendations

The accommodations and activities shown below are recommendations selected using clear criteria , for their location, comfort, and overall experience—prioritizing reliable providers.

Day 1

Blois & Chambord: First pedal strokes in the Loire Valley

Arrive in Blois to pick up your ride. For this first day, we’re starting strong with a loop toward the majestic Château de Chambord. On the menu: safe cycling paths, a picnic facing the estate, and a return trip along the Loire riverbanks.

  • Morning arrival in Blois and one-way bike rental pickup
  • Safe cycling loop Blois → Chambord (≈ 42 km round trip)
  • Picnic with local flavors facing the castle
  • Sound & Light show at the Château de Blois (seasonal)

    Transportation

    Arrival in Blois

    Blois-Chambord Station

I recommend arriving in the morning to make the most of this first day. The train is definitely the easiest way to reach the starting point of your journey.

  • Morning #2 ≈ 30 min
    Activity

    One-way bike pickup

    Blois (City Center / Station)

I highly suggest "one-way" rentals: you rent your bikes here in Blois and drop them off in Saumur. For your suitcases, don't sweat it: most rental shops offer hotel-to-hotel luggage transfers. It's the essential option for pedaling light and enjoying the views.

    Option 1: Ezbike

    Start Blois → Finish Saumur

    E-bike rental

Perfect for E-bikes. Just tell them your start and end points.

    Option 2: Les Vélos Verts

A wide fleet (hybrid for the sporty types or electric for comfort) for all budgets. Note: remember to check the bike retrieval fees.

    Heading to Chambord by bike

    La Loire à Vélo route

Off we go for about 21 km! A shorter route exists, but I really suggest sticking to the Loire riverbanks: it's much safer and more pleasant. Before leaving Blois, don't forget to stop by the bakery for your picnic lunch.

  • Midday #4
    Recommended meal

    Royal picnic facing the castle

    Chambord Estate

Eating on the grass with a view of this stone giant is the perfect "cliché" moment. For a picnic that tastes like the region, go for some rillettes, a good Sainte-Maure de Touraine (goat cheese), and a local apple. Simple and efficient.

  • Afternoon #5 ≈ 2h30–3h

    Domaine national de Chambord

For me, this is quite simply one of the most beautiful castles in France. Its scale is incredible. Don't miss the double-helix staircase (attributed to Leonardo da Vinci) and head up to the terraces to see the chimneys up close. On the logistics side, there’s a very convenient bike parking lot right next to the main entrance.

  • Late Afternoon #6 ≈ 1h30
    Transportation

Heading back quietly toward Blois. If you still have energy, get lost in the city center alleys—the architecture is stunning and often underrated. Day 2

Chaumont & Amboise: Ephemeral gardens and Da Vinci's genius

We continue down the Loire toward the West. A day marked by creativity with the gardens of Chaumont-sur-Loire, before reaching Amboise, a royal city where Leonardo da Vinci’s shadow still lingers.

  • International Garden Festival at Chaumont (2026 Edition)
  • Wild route along the Loire riverbanks (≈ 40 km total)
  • Amboise: Royal Castle or Clos Lucé—your choice

Day 3

Chenonceau & Tours: Arches over the Cher and the "Plum" vibe

Change of scenery: we temporarily leave the banks of the Loire to join those of the Cher. The goal? To discover the Château de Chenonceau, a true poetic masterpiece that spans the river, before heading to Tours for a lively evening on the famous Place Plumereau.

  • Crossing to the Cher Valley (change of atmosphere)
  • Visit Chenonceau, the "Ladies' Castle" over the water
  • Arrival in Tours and aperitif at Place Plumereau
  • Tasting local wines (Chinon, Vouvray, or Montlouis)

  • Morning (09:00) #1 ≈ 1h15 pedaling
    Transportation

From Amboise to the Cher Valley

    Amboise → Chenonceaux (13 km)

We're switching valleys! As soon as you leave the Loire to follow the Cher, the atmosphere gets more intimate. My tip: if you're in Amboise on a Friday or Sunday, hit the market in the morning to assemble your picnic with ultra-fresh products. Otherwise, just stop by the nearest bakery.

  • Afternoon #4 ≈ 2h30 pedaling

    Heading to Tours

    Chenonceaux → Tours (≈ 35 km)

We’re reaching the largest city of the trip. Don't arrive too late so you have time to wander! Once in town, go see the Château de Tours. Note: it's an exhibition center, so no historic furniture inside, but the building is worth a look. Watch out for the cobblestones in Old Tours—they get slippery fast if it’s rained!

Day 4

Villandry & Azay-le-Rideau: French gardens and water castles

A fluid and bucolic day following the Cher on one of the most zen portions of the trip. On the program: the geometric gardens of Villandry and the water mirror of Azay-le-Rideau.

  • Ultra-relaxing pedaling on the banks of the Cher
  • Explore the Villandry gardens, masterpieces of geometry

FAQ

It's historical: the Loire was the seat of royal power in France for a long time. Between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, kings and nobility built lavish residences there for hunting, prestige, and the pleasant climate. The river also served as a highway to transport materials, facilitating this unique concentration.
