Method-selected recommendations
The accommodations and activities shown below are recommendations selected using clear criteria , for their location, comfort, and overall experience—prioritizing reliable providers.
Day 1 · Arrival and immersion in the City of Popes
The trip starts off gently. The Avignon train station allows for a direct arrival from anywhere in France, and we jump right into the heart of the matter with the city's absolute must-see.
- Palais des Papes
- Place de l'Horloge
- Morning#1Morning #1Transportation
Train arrival in Avignon
Avignon Train StationTrain connections are regular and direct from all over the country, including northern France. To be perfectly honest, this is the smoothest way to kick off a week in the south. We quickly drop our bags at the hotel so we have our hands free to start enjoying the city right away.

Activity Recommended by usExploring the Palais des Papes and wandering around
Avignon historical centerWe start strong with a visit to the Palais des Papes. I highly recommend using the Histopad on site. It is hands down the best way to actually visualize the original layout and room volumes. Remember to book your time slot in advance via the official ticket office during the busy season. Afterward, we just let ourselves wander through the narrow streets. Stopping by the Place de l'Horloge is a great idea to catch some shade when the sun is beating down.

Avignon terracesWhen the weather is nice, around 6 or 7 PM, we take the time to sit down on a terrace. It is that little essential ritual to soak in the end of this first day of immersion.

Hôtel Le Colbert
A really great spot right in the center with a 4.7/5 rating. Its biggest perk is the secure public parking located just a three-minute walk away. That is a strategic detail I planned out for you since we will be renting a car tomorrow morning.
⭐ 4.7 · Highly rated by our travelersBook on the official websiteHôtel Boquier
Also rated 4.7/5, this small establishment has a very warm boutique style. It has a deeply cozy atmosphere that I completely approve of if you are doing this trip as a couple.

Day 2 · Hilltop villages and ochre lands
Today is when our road trip really comes into its own. We pick up our vehicle using a little budget trick and set off to explore the gems of the Luberon.
- Gordes
- Sénanque Abbey
- Ochre Trail

Vehicle pickup
AvignonHere is a little budget trick I always use. We only pick up the vehicle this morning to save ourselves paying for an unused rental day yesterday. It is the perfect tool for covering the region at our own pace. Book your car well in advance during the high season to get better choices and rates.

Gordes and the Sénanque Abbey
GordesWe take off early towards Gordes, which easily stands as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. Park directly at the lots at the village entrance so you do not have to attempt impossible maneuvers in the narrow streets. Then we take a quick detour to the Sénanque Abbey right next door. This is the classic photo spot with the blooming lavender in June and July. That said, it is also really nice out of season. I was there one February and the huge advantage is having the place entirely to yourself. For guided tours, book your slot through the official ticket office.
- Noon#3Noon #3Recommended meal
Local products picnic
Around GordesFor lunch, we are going with a picnic. I suggest buying fresh products that same morning in Avignon or Gordes. With some good bread, charcuterie, cheese, and quality olives, it is pure happiness. The best approach is to aim for a market day to take in the smells and track down the best local goods.

Activity Recommended by usThe colors of Roussillon
RoussillonWe hit the road towards Roussillon and its famous ochre trail. It is fascinating to see the landscapes change so drastically in just a few miles. You will find gorgeous colors here all year round, peaking in intensity during spring and fall. Since the site gets packed quickly in summer, the workaround is to arrive right at opening time or late in the day to walk in peace. Before heading out, check the hours and access conditions on the official page.

Day 3 · Roman immersion and cooling off by the Gardon
We are taking advantage of the car we picked up yesterday to drive a bit further out and step back in time. We are heading to the legendary Pont du Gard for a day that perfectly mixes majestic heritage with waterside fun.
- Pont du Gard
- Swimming in the Gardon
- Duchy of Uzès

- Morning#1Morning #1Activity
Discovering the Pont du Gard
Pont du GardWe jump in the car and make a beeline for the Pont du Gard. It is an ancient three-level Roman aqueduct that is incredibly well preserved. Once there, I suggest a short walk along the Gardon river. If you are visiting in summer, swimming is super easy and really refreshing in water that warms up quickly. It is exactly what you need to cool down before lunch. For the museum and discovery areas, grab your tickets from the official ticket office.

Picnic and exploring all the way to Uzès
Collias and UzèsFor the rest of the day, you have two great options to choose from.

Relaxed option
Waterside picnic + Uzès
Relaxed
We keep the car parked by the bridge for a waterside picnic, then head to Uzès in the afternoon. The goal is to see its Duchy, the very first in France, which offers a striking display of feudal architecture right in the town center. To prep your visit, check the hours and tickets on the official site.

Canoeing from Collias
Active
We start from Collias in a canoe or kayak to paddle down the Gardon. Passing directly under the bridge arches is truly impressive from below. Just remember to pack a dry bag with your picnic, sunscreen, and water. Depending on your pace on the water, you could string this together with a walk around Uzès right after. To pick a rental company and check conditions, rely on the official tourist office.

Day 4 · Alpilles regional park and stone fortress
We are back behind the wheel this morning to dive deep into the Alpilles regional natural park. You are in for a day full of contrasts, moving from the energy of Provençal markets to the quiet, rocky ridges.
- Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
- Hiking in the Alpilles
- Glanum
- Les Baux-de-Provence

- Morning#1Morning #1Activity
Wandering and market shopping in Saint-Rémy
Saint-Rémy-de-ProvencePark your car in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to kick off the day. If you plan your trip to be here on a Wednesday, run straight to the Place de la République between 8 AM and 1 PM. The large Provençal market is in full swing and it is quite simply the best place to stock up on great local goods. On Saturdays, the mood shifts with a farmers market over by the Avenue de la Résistance. Keep in mind to double check any exceptional dates or cancellations on the official market page or with the town hall.
- Morning#2Morning #2Activity
Nature escape in the heart of the Alpilles
Lake Peïroou and RidgesTime to lace up your sneakers. I have a great nature alternative for you if you want to break away from the classic tours. Keep an eye on the access rules during peak season as this is a sensitive area with fire risks. Before heading out, check the official guidelines for accessing the massifs. If it is closed or too restricted, just switch to a more classic hike in the Alpilles.

Diving into history at Glanum
Glanum archaeological siteThe Glanum site practically touches Lake Peïroou. I recommend making a short but highly informative stop here to really grasp how this ancient Celto-Ligurian settlement turned into a Roman city over time. When it gets crowded, definitely buy your ticket on the official ticket office site.
- Evening#4Evening #4Activity
Rocky atmosphere in Les Baux-de-Provence
Les Baux-de-ProvenceLate in the afternoon, we set our sights on Les Baux-de-Provence. You are going to feel a completely different, rocky atmosphere compared to the previous days. It is a very raw, perched village dominated by the ruins of its old medieval fortress carved right into the rock. The low light hitting the stone is stunning at this hour. If you want to extend the evening with an immersive experience, the Carrières des Lumières are right at the bottom of the village. I always say to book your time slot in advance via the official ticket office.

Day 5 · Following the water down to the Rome of the Gauls
This is our transition day. We hand in the hotel keys in Avignon, then hit the road to slowly glide south and settle into Arles, catching some beautiful Provençal stops along the way.
- L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
- Wine estates
- Arles Amphitheatre
- In the footsteps of Van Gogh

Canals and market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
After checking out, we drive towards L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Walking along the canals is incredibly soothing. If you happen to be there on a Thursday or Sunday, you will catch the market. It spreads out quite a bit in the summer and provides the perfect setting to wander among the colorful stalls. Remember to check the exact hours on the official market page.

Drive towards Arles and local terroir
On the way to ArlesWe get back in our car to head down to Arles. This drive is the perfect excuse to stop at a local winery or an olive grove. Let me know directly if you are looking for specific addresses for a tasting along the way.

Amphitheatre and Monument Pass trick
ArlesWelcome to Arles, right in the heart of the Rome of the Gauls. The city holds the largest number of Roman monuments after Rome itself. Naturally, we start with the impressive amphitheatre. Here is a highly useful trick: buy the global Monument Pass today on the official ticketing site. It will seriously cut down your entry costs for the other sites like the Roman theatre, the cryptoporticus, and the Alyscamps.

Option: In the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh
Arles historical center
If old stones are not really your thing or you just want to mix it up after the amphitheatre, here is the perfect alternative. The city of Arles left a deep mark on Vincent van Gogh. I strongly advise you to stroll through the courtyard of the Espace Van Gogh, the former hospital, where the flowerbeds inspired one of his famous paintings. For bigger art fans, the Fondation Vincent van Gogh is right nearby and always puts on fantastic exhibitions that create a dialogue between the master's painting and contemporary artists. If you are aiming for a highly popular exhibition, grab your tickets in advance through the official ticket office.

Hôtel et Spa Le Calendal
A superb spot located in the old town with a 4.6/5 rating. This is my top pick for heading out to explore the Camargue during the day and being able to do everything on foot when evening comes.

Also very well rated at 4.5/5. This is the perfect choice if you appreciate the authentic charm of old stones for your Provençal nights.

Day 6 · Wild immersion in the heart of the Camargue
We are taking the car to get away from the city and dive into the vastness of the Camargue. A day dedicated to nature and wide open spaces awaits us in this incredible southern wetland.
- Pont de Gau Ornithological Park
- Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer
- Aigues-Mortes

- Morning#1Morning #1Activity Recommended by us
Watching the pink flamingos
Pont de Gau Ornithological Park
We start off strong by going to see the wild pink flamingos. The walk through the park is very easy, plan for about 1 to 3 miles depending on the trail you pick. The feather colors are at their best from June to November, but do not worry, the birds stick around all year. When it gets busy, you can get your tickets online at the official ticket office.
- Noon#2Noon #2Activity
Walk and panoramic view in Saintes-Maries
Saintes-Maries-de-la-MerWe set a course for Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer for a nice walk on the beach. Make sure you plan a visit to the church in the center of the village. The real highlight is climbing up to the roof to look out over the entire town and enjoy the view. Check the roof terrace access hours on the official page.
- Noon#3Noon #3Recommended meal
Careful dining by the sea
Saintes-Maries-de-la-MerYou have to be a bit careful when eating lunch here because there are a lot of tourist traps along the seafront. My advice is to absolutely step away from the main streets or check online reviews before sitting down at a table.
- Afternoon#4Afternoon #4
Activity Recommended by usRamparts and pink salt in Aigues-Mortes
Aigues-MortesWe end the day around Aigues-Mortes. It is a stunning fortified town sitting right by the water. I highly recommend walking the ramparts. You start with the museum covering the city's history, then you walk along the walls with a wide open view. You can follow that up by visiting the Aigues-Mortes salt marshes, the birthplace of La Baleine salt. Pick your format, whether a little train or a walk, and book if needed. The ticket is a bit of an investment, but it lets you walk right among the pools and climb an actual mountain of salt. By the way, the marshes take on intense pink shades from May to October, it is gorgeous. Always verify the formats, hours, and exact details on the official sites for the ramparts and the salt marshes.

Day 7 · Final moments in Arles and departure
All good things must come to an end. We are enjoying one last, relaxed morning in the narrow streets of Arles before handing in the keys and catching the train, heading home with heads full of Provence memories.
- Place du Forum
- Last minute shopping
- Arles Train Station

- Morning#1Morning #1Activity
Morning coffee and final strolls
Arles historical centerAfter checking out, we treat ourselves to one last Arlesian pleasure that I particularly love. I suggest grabbing a seat on a terrace in the famous Place du Forum for a morning coffee, just to soak up the atmosphere that inspired Van Gogh so much. We take advantage of this to walk a few final steps through the pedestrian streets, and why not slip a bag of navettes or a few calissons into your bag before closing this chapter.
- Morning#2Morning #2Transportation
Returning the vehicle
ArlesIt is time to wrap up our logistics. We drop off the rental car that served us so well all week to explore the Luberon and the Camargue in total freedom.
