Method-selected recommendations
The accommodations and activities shown below are recommendations selected using clear criteria , for their location, comfort, and overall experience—prioritizing reliable providers.
Day 1 · The Engineering Marvel and The Commonwealth Sectors
Bayeux is the perfect base, as its beautifully preserved streets and cozy bistros offer the perfect charming French contrast to an emotionally heavy day. Today, we focus on the sheer logistical scale of the invasion along the British and Canadian sectors, taking in some sweeping coastal views along the way.
- Sweeping coastal views from the Arromanches cliffs
- The engineering marvel of the artificial harbor
- Exploring the open-air artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer
- Honoring the Canadian forces at Juno Beach

Arromanches-les-BainsStart up on the cliffs for an immersive 360-degree film that plunges you into the 100 Days of Normandy using rare archival footage. The hilltop location also offers gorgeous, sweeping views of the English Channel.

Musée du Débarquement
Arromanches-les-Bains
Head down into the picturesque town to visit this state-of-the-art museum sitting right on the waterfront. Look out the windows, and you can still see the massive concrete caissons resting in the water. Why it matters: The Allies faced an impossible logistical problem: an invading army needs a deep-water port to survive, but heavily defended ports like Cherbourg would take more times to capture. The "Mulberry" artificial harbor proved they could literally tow their own port across the Channel, an engineering miracle that changed the course of the war.
- Lunch#3Recommended meal
Local Lunch in the Village
Arromanches-les-BainsTwo good lunch styles work well in Arromanches before the afternoon sites: a classic galette stop or a more leisurely sit-down meal in the village.

Longues-sur-Mer Battery

Take a scenic 15-minute drive west to explore this open-air site. It is one of the rare places in Normandy where the original German artillery guns are still sitting inside their massive concrete bunkers. Why it matters: Positioned strategically between Omaha and Gold beaches, these four 150mm guns had the range to devastate the Allied fleet. While it was heavily bombarded by Allied cruisers to silence its deadly fire on D-Day morning, the incredibly thick concrete casemates survived the shelling. The guns were disabled but never destroyed, leaving behind a chillingly well-preserved piece of the Atlantic Wall.
- Afternoon#5Activity
Juno Beach Centre
Courseulles-sur-MerExplore this outstanding museum built by veterans. It brilliantly details both the military combat effort and the incredible societal mobilization back home that supported the liberation. Why it matters: Juno was the designated Canadian landing zone. Despite suffering devastating casualties in the first wave, Canadian forces successfully navigated heavily mined waters and pushed further inland than any other Allied unit on June 6th, linking the British sectors together.

Juno Beach & Bunkers
Courseulles-sur-Mer
Walk the historic sands and explore the preserved German command bunkers still standing right along the coastline. Why it matters: Standing here helps you grasp the terrifying reality of an amphibious assault. The infantry had to cross hundreds of yards of exposed sand at low tide, directly facing heavily fortified concrete pillboxes and interconnected trench systems.
- Evening#7
Activity Recommended by usEvening in Bayeux
Stroll through the medieval streets and admire the illuminated cathedral. The city offers cozy bistros and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere to unwind after an emotionally heavy day. Why it matters: Bayeux is miraculously preserved because it was the first major French city liberated by the Allies (on June 7th) completely intact and without bombardment. It immediately served as a safe haven and vital medical hub for wounded soldiers.

Hôtel d'Argouges
Historic charm with a more reasonable budget
Hotel
My value-for-character pick in Bayeux. This elegant 18th-century townhouse gives you a peaceful courtyard-and-garden feel while keeping you right in the historic center, which is ideal if you want to walk to dinner after a full day on the D-Day sites.

Day 2 · The American Heart at Omaha Beach and The Rangers
Today brings us to Omaha Beach, the most emotionally profound stop for any American visiting Normandy. Getting an early start lets you experience the solemn beauty of the cemetery and the rugged, dramatic cliffs of Pointe du Hoc in total peace.
- A peaceful morning at the Normandy American Cemetery
- Walking the historic sands of Omaha Beach
- Exploring the dramatic, crater-filled landscape of Pointe du Hoc

The Normandy American Cemetery
Colleville-sur-Mer
I highly recommend picking up sandwiches in Bayeux this morning. Drive to Colleville-sur-Mer and be at the cemetery gates right at 9 AM. Walking through the morning mist, well before the tour buses arrive, is an experience you will never forget. Why it matters: Situated on a bluff directly overlooking Omaha Beach, this hallowed ground is the final resting place for 9,389 American service members. The endless rows of perfectly aligned white crosses and Stars of David provide a staggering visual representation of the human cost required to liberate Europe.
- Morning#2
Activity Recommended by usOmaha Beach and the Dog Green Sector
Vierville-sur-MerDrive the coastal road along Omaha Beach and pause at the beautiful 'Les Braves' monument at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, rising directly from the sand. Stand by the water's edge and look up at the towering bluffs behind the beach. Why it matters: Omaha was a tactical nightmare and the most heavily defended of the five landing zones. Because preliminary bombardments missed their targets, American troops stepped off their landing craft into a lethal crossfire of machine guns and artillery. The brutal battle here earned it the name "Bloody Omaha."

Pointe du Hoc

Walk through a surreal lunar landscape of massive bomb craters and shattered concrete bunkers covered in bright green grass. When you stand at the edge and look down the spectacular 100-foot drop to the crashing waves below, the heroism of the soldiers becomes undeniably real. Why it matters: Allied intelligence believed a battery of heavy 155mm guns was stationed here, capable of raining devastating fire on both the Utah and Omaha landing zones. Scaling these sheer cliffs with ropes and ladders under heavy enemy fire by the 2nd Ranger Battalion was one of the most daring, almost suicidal, assault missions of the entire invasion.

Day 3 · The Airborne Drop Zones and The Western Flank
We head into the lush, green Cotentin Peninsula today to trace the footsteps of the American paratroopers. This day perfectly balances the massive scale of the airborne drops with quiet, deeply human stories tucked away in beautiful French farming villages.
- The iconic paratrooper display in Sainte-Mère-Église
- Immersive history at the Airborne Museum
- A hidden 11th-century church with a touching story
- The vast and peaceful sands of Utah Beach
- Morning#1
Activity Recommended by usSainte-Mère-Église Town Square
Start in the famous town square, where the effigy of a paratrooper with a white canopy still hangs from the historic church spire. It is an iconic, must-see sight. Why it matters: That effigy represents American paratrooper John Steele of the 82nd Airborne. During the chaotic night drops hours before the beach landings, his parachute snagged on the church steeple, leaving him hanging there while a fierce firefight raged in the square below.
- Morning#2Activity
Airborne Museum
Sainte-Mère-ÉgliseExplore this world-class museum right next door to the church. Its immersive exhibits let you actually step inside an original C-47 transport plane and a Waco glider. Why it matters: The paratroopers were dropped in pitch darkness and scattered miles from their targets. This museum powerfully captures how these small, lost groups managed to survive, regroup, and secure the vital roads needed for the troops landing at Utah Beach.

Angoville-au-Plain Church
Visit this quiet, isolated 11th-century church surrounded by farmland. Inside, you can still see dark bloodstains preserved on the wooden pews. Why it matters: During the fierce battles in the surrounding hedgerows, two 101st Airborne medics, Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore, set up an aid station here. Over several days, they treated 80 wounded soldiers—both American and German.
- Afternoon#5
Activity Recommended by usUtah Beach and Landing Museum
Sainte-Marie-du-MontEnd your historical journey on the vast, flat, and peaceful sands of Utah Beach. The excellent Landing Museum built directly into the dunes perfectly wraps up your Normandy exploration. Why it matters: Added to the invasion plan to secure a quicker route to the deep-water port of Cherbourg, this landing was a tactical anomaly. Strong currents pushed the landing craft off-course to a less defended sector resulting in the most successful beach assault of the day with the fewest casualties.
